Dr. Zamambo Mkhize

The Head of Dermatology at the Harry Gwala

Parents: Rev Creswell and Mrs Dorcas Mkhize

Dr. Zamambo Mkhize is a passionate medical doctor and educator with a very keen interest in education and philanthropy. As a child she could not decide on whether to become a teacher or a doctor, and her mother said something prophetic: “you will be a doctor that teaches other doctors”. She is a qualified Specialist Dermatologist who has served in the public health system in South Africa for over 20 years.

She is currently the Head of Dermatology at the Harry Gwala Edendale Hospital where she grew up and serves patients who come as far as Ixopo, Umzimkulu, Eastern Cape and even Lesotho. The hospitals in these rural areas do not have specialist doctors and refer their complicated cases to Edendale. This was a major motivation for her to remain in the public sector and especially to serve the communities from these areas.

Concurrently, Dr. Mkhize is a Senior Lecturer and research supervisor at the UKZN School of Medicine and an Examiner and moderator of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa(CMSA), college of Dermatologists. She enjoys teaching medical students, Registrars and other doctors.

She has focused on using her skills, time and experience to give back to communities in Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas. She spends significant time mentoring young doctors in Edendale and at the University of KZN Medical School in Durban. She is also a mentor in the STEM programme run by STEM MentHER. As part of her active community engagement, she conducts dermatology and medical clinics in some of the most poverty ridden rural areas on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg.

Dr Mkhize has co-authored a few research papers and presented at some Dermatology Society of South Africa(DSSA) congresses She was nominated to serve on the CMSA Council 2023-2026 triennium elections but declined this honour to focus on community work and teaching.
