Our Mission

Our Mission is to give girls from underserved communities a BETTER CHANCE and a BETTER FUTURE so they can build a BETTER LIFE for themselves, their families, communities and the world. We aim to provide A BETTER CHANCE for talented black girls to address the trend of poverty afflicting black women as well the underrepresentation of black women in economic, political and social leadership roles in society.

How We Do It

Talent Scouting and Academic Placement

We identify, recruit and select talented and high performing girls from underrepresented and underserved rural and semi-rural communities and place them in private schools which have partnered with the Programme.

Heritage of Excellence: The Inanda Seminary Collaboration

The first cohort of A Better Future Initiative have been placed at the Inanda Seminary School for Girls in Durban, South Africa. The Inanda Seminary School has been developing and training black women leaders for over 118 years. Its alumni include some of the most notable black women leaders in politics, business and civil society movements.

Comprehensive Support through Education

Tuition and Boarding fees for girls are covered through the Bursary Award. Throughout their High School journey, the girls will undergo leadership training and mentorship programmes provided by the Imbeleko Foundation as well as being exposed to a number of self-development and growth opportunities. The Initiative will also seek to arrange international exchange programmes for the cohort.

Why this work is important to us?

Black Girls in South Africa bear the brunt of the Country’s inequities

Unemployment

Black African women have an unemployment rate that is 42.4%, which is 4.2% higher than the national average.

Gender Based Violence

South Africa is considered the rape capital of the world. In 2023, research suggests that over 15,000 women were victims of physical and sexual assault, and more than 960 women were killed because of domestic violence related cases.

Gender Inequality

Black women are the most vulnerable in South Africa. Historical and cultural marginalisation of girls compounded by violence against girls

Adolescent Pregnancies

SA has one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancies in the world. Almost 1 in 4 girls is pregnant between 10 and 19 years and they do not return to school – DBE report.

These challenges create a CYCLE OF POVERTY and dependency on government grants for black women and their children. As a result, young talented black girls do not grow up to reach their potential and black women remain underrepresented in economic, political and social leadership roles and ranks in society.

● You may choose to sponsor a child for the whole amount or for a fraction of the fees.
● A breakdown of the fee structure and other related costs for a Grade 8 girl, including cosmetics, is available.
