The Thinabantu Foundation was founded in 2010 by Tumi Dlamini. She was always touched by the dire circumstances of people in the community where she grew up and the surrounding areas. From a young age, she always knew that she would one day go back to make a positive contribution and to bring about impactful positive change to the people in her community and in South Africa generally.
Tumi’s commitment to community work was inspired by her beloved late grandmother Mrs. Gladys Louisa Nomsa Dhlamini, (Gogo Dhlamini) who was the first registered Black Midwife in Natal South Africa. Gogo Dhlamini, a pioneer in her field and in womens’ reproductive health, was devoted to community upliftment and often involved her grandchildren in her initiatives. Her grandmother’s work played a big role in inspiring Tumi to establish the Thinabantu Foundation.
The name Thinabantu is a Zulu word meaning “We, the people”. The name was given to Tumi at birth by her mother, Phoebe Thulile Bam, as a second name. However, at a young age, Tumi dropped it in favour of having only one name. Only much later in life did she realise the depth and the significance of the name she had been given at birth and that her purpose in her life was in fact to work for the people. She therefore chose to name the Foundation Thinabantu, in tribute to her beloved mother and grandmother.
The Foundation aims to improve lives of the people it serves by working with our partners to design and provide specialised interventional programmes:
• For educational opportunities for girls, including providing school necessities for students at large, and
• Offer humanitarian support during times crises and natural disasters in South Africa.
